EILEEN KIRBY

Eileen Kirby was born to create. A free spirited dress designer, her fondness of fairy tales, vintage detailing and all things sparkly come to life in her stunning range of intimate and delicate pieces.

How did it come about, you designing evening wear?

I’ve known I wanted to do this since I was a little girl. I’ve always loved beautiful fabrics and beaded pieces.

What do you love about your job?

Making girls look beautiful, empowering them, making them confident and giving them strength.

What are you inspired by?

The ballet, antiques, anything retro or vintage. Old French pieces, jewels, Princesses, and fairy tales.

What will girls be wearing to their formals this year?

I’d love to see girls tap into a more classic look but still keep it edgy, put some groovy into it. You want to be able to look back in ten to twenty years and love what you wore. Take the opportunity to bring out the inner Goddess.

Finding matching accessories can be tricky, any advice?

Let the dress speak for itself. I’ve always gone with the advice that less is more when it comes to accessories. Natural make up, tousled hair and simple accessories.

What did you wear to your formal?

Mum bought me a sewing machine and fabric from a bargain store. I made a dusty blue, ruched ‘Juliet’ style dress. My teachers called it the ‘botticelli look’.

If you had a formal event tonight, what would you wear?

The 'All I Want Dress'. It's the black & white stripe dress from my current collection.

You’ve dressed quite a few celebrities, what’s been your favourite red carpet moment?

Hermione Kitson at the Logies. She is such a beautiful person.

What are you looking forward to this year?

I’m always looking forward to creating my next collection.

And finally…. Any last minute advice for girls having their formal this year?

Choose the most beautiful, frivolous dress you can find and top it off with a pair of boots!

EMMA

Life has been busy for Emma since leaving Dubbo four years ago. She’s on the verge of completing a University degree, has worked for some of Australia’s top designers and is currently employed at Samantha Wills. Emma has impeccable style and the ability to make anything look beautiful. While she has her feet on the ground she is chasing dreams and creating magic along the way. I caught up with her recently to ask a few questions:

Do you miss the country?

Yes and no. There are a lot more opportunities in the city for people to chase their dreams. The Country though brings friends, family and familiarity. There’s really no place like home.

You work at Samantha Wills, how did that come about?

I was fortunate enough to gain a full time position with Samantha Wills after completing an Internship at the SW Head Office during my first year of Uni.

What is your favourite part of the job?

No two days are ever the same and being surrounded by such ambitious and inspiring people shows me that anything is truly possible.

Which Samantha Wills pieces are you loving right now?

The Bohemian Bardot Shoulder Duster Earrings are stunning, and I love The All Night Radio Necklace. Oh, and the Under New York Skies ring.

 Describe your style

All black everything. Oversized. Fur Fur Fur. Clashing textures and feminine meets masculine, always.

 What are your favourite labels?

Deadly Ponies, Seventh Wonderland, Romance was Born, Ellery, Bassike, Maurie & Eve and of course Samantha Wills.

What will you be wearing this Autumn/Winter?

My black vintage fur coat, harem pants, an angora beanie and silk blouses.

What are you doing when you're not at work?

When I’m not at work I’m catching up with friends, old and new for brunch, seeing live music in the city, discovering underground wine bars or catching up on reading and creative writing.

What are you looking forward to this year?

New beginnings. Turning 22. Finishing my Uni degree and exploring the world.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

Living overseas (fingers crossed New York), working for myself and creating something beautiful, whatever that may be!

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week 2013

First Timers…

Barb and I arrived on day two of the much anticipated fashion frenzy that is ‘Fashion Week’. We had been planning our trip for weeks. What to wear and which shows to see, checking weather forecasts, and as predicted there was rain and lots of it! Enough so, that once we had parked the car we were trapped. Trapped by a body of water! Barb was well prepared, she slipped into her Haviannas and trudged on through it. I on the other hand was not so prepared. At least my leather boots softened up!

Sydney’s Carriage Works in Redfern played host to this years fashion festivities. Its industrial, rustic feel was the perfect backdrop for such a vast array of colour, tones, textures and embellishments that adorned the guests.

Our first show was Ginger & Smart. We were seated in the third row. The collection “SHAPESHIFTER SS13” was full of sharp, clean lines and a rainbow prism pattern featured throughout. Crop tops put a modern edge on tailored suits while colours were luminous – solid mid blue and sherbet. This is a new label for us and we can’t wait for it to arrive.

Our second show was Taluah’s “CHASING RAINBOWS” collection and as suggested in its title there was plenty of colour. Beautiful floral prints in bright, bold hues and sheer shirts balanced each piece perfectly. Just prior to the show we heard a familiar announcement: “the show is about to start, please fill any available front row seats” and just then girls scrambled from all directions to fill the available seats. Ahhh….we’re onto this game!

On day three the sun was shining and Sydney’s fashion friends were out in full force. I went on a ‘Street Style’ snapping frenzy, capturing pictures of Napolean Perdis, Jessica Stein of ‘Tuula Vintage’, Connie Cao of 'K is for Kani', and Amanda Shadforth of ‘Oracle Fox’.

Our third and final show was Alice McCall’s “LES GALERIES de POISON”. There it was, the announcement! I moved so fast to the vacant seats directly in front that I left my handbag and coat behind. Luckily Barb was on the job. She managed to handle two handbags, two jackets and a camera all in a swift, casual motion (unlike my hasty self). The show was a beautiful, under the sea inspired collection. The models resembled mystical sea creatures in softly washed tones of bone and seashell pink. Their hair was pulled back in wet look, messy ponytails as though just pulled from the ocean.

So there we were front row, goody bag in hand (thanks to that hasty move) at our final show. We were exhausted yet wonderfully overwhelmed by the whole experience. Over two days I had seen more fashion, celebrities and models than I had in my entire life and it’s taken me over a week to process it all. How on earth do people survive the full week?? After this years experience 'that' I am willing to find out!

Peplum Power

Mary and Me - Monday, August 20, 2012

The peplum has quickly become a staple piece in almost every girls wardrobe. The Alligator leather peplum top from Maurie and Eve's latest collection is a favourite in fashion blogger Harper and Harley's wardrobe. The backless detail gives it a little unexpected surprise and comes in a beautiful soft grey croc embossed finished. Add this perfect piece to your Spring wardrobe.

Babooshka - Alice McCall SS12/13 one word DIVINE

Mary and Me - Friday, May 04, 2012
A sunny start to Day 3 Fashion Week began with the highly anticipated show 'Babooshka' by Alice McCall. The who's who of the fashion world were out in force, with celebrity Ruby Rose styled in one of the runway garments ( I might add I was sitting in the row directly behind her!)

For Alice McCall, Budapest’s famous antiquated stain glass windows were a starting point for her Summer 2012/2013 collection, entitled ‘Babooshka’. The styling of the show was perfect in every way. The models approached the runway in sparkling gemstone jewels, pastel pointed toe court shoes, whimsical french braids styled with powder blue bandanas and pink rosy cheeks - all in reflection of the Babooshka doll. A kaleidoscope of sun-drenched colours creep across dresses- powered lavender, marigold yellow, raspberry coulis, cherry tomato red and pastel mandarin – in digital prints of floral folk embroidery and stain glass patterns. Silhouettes such as apron necklines, lampshade skirts, sundresses and onesies conjure traditional Hungarian dress; buy with a sports- luxe edge. Like Talulah, white and neon shades reigned on trend styles with McCall adding depth and a sentimental note through gemstone resin beading overlay prints, tone on tone appliqué detailing and rainbow foiling to add a futuristic element.

We cannot wait to bring you the beautiful styles at the end of the year and it's hard to not want one of everything.

Another highlight to the Day 3 start was getting snapped by Fashion blogger 'Breakfast with Audrey' for street style.
